16The Three Jokers #2 Review | HOW There Are THREE JOKERS Explained & Who Will Be The NEW JOKER?!
We start off with the comedian joker going to a house where he is playing happy families. This turns out to be a fake life as The Comedian Joker as the criminal joker looks confused and is angry that the clown joker is dead. Now this fake life is seemingly the comedian of the killing joke living his life beyond becoming the joker as the original comedian who became the red hood had a wife who was pregnant and this is him living the life he dreamed of albeit him still becoming the joker
One of the jokers has managed to kill Judge Walls who was taking bribes to send people to arkham and forced out a few years ago. Batman and barb debate if red hood is a criminal or not but I really liked how this nuanced discussion went as they talk about how barbara had trauma of course as part of the killing joke but she rebuilt herself better after as she had a support network but jason todd post death in the family rebuilt himself worse. We all know he was a bratty kid before and wasn’t given the chance to become like dick grayson as he was neutralised early and considering everyone thought he was dead.
Batman still has remorse for this and I have seen people moaning that not only has geoff johns retread the steps of the watchmen and now the killing joke by the same author but where as the former had a limp payoff and felt so disconnected to the original, the three jokers is the therapy and interesting nuanced post match analysis for lack of a better term of the killing joke. This is the same for death in the family and I have never been much of a jason todd fan despite his return but that’s just me however adding depth to the edgy character is much needed. Jason is now looking for the joker as it becomes clear he didn't kill the 'true' joker and we have to wonder when this is set as we currently have the ongoing joker war, is this set after that, before, during? The problem with DC Rebirth was that all of the mysteries took years to actually be explained OR where vry very underwhelming like Oz being Zor El.
Jason goes full red hood as be beats a joker crew member and asks him where the chemicals are being hidden as that's of course where the jokers are. However we have a side story of barb and bruce going to blackgate as finger prints of joe chill were found on the body of judge walls but chill is locked up so how?
While walking the halls of blackgate there are some neat easter eggs with the names of aka doctor phosphorous and Ruper Thorne, the latter investigating batman as city council man after batman tangled with phoshorous. Batman is clearly still not over joe chill killing is parents as he interrogates him and gets choked up only to realise that he isn't actually there and he has been moved as he is dying of stage four cancer. We cut to Red Hood as he tracks down the joker and the cut chains make a smiley face, possible return of the watchmen universe? Probably not.
Jason finds a pool full of people turned into jokers and it seems clear that each joker iteration throughout history seems to be clones using the joker toxin which is scary as it seems the joker isn't one guy but an idea. This becomes clear as jason is interrogated as the joker explains that he was supposed to become the joker after death after being re born. Barbara was supposed to be reborn after being shot I think and we also have it with the comedian of course being re born after falling into the chemicals. He's asked why he put on the red hood as its the man who almost killed him but it looks like he chose the wrong persona as the joker wanted him to become the joker, not the first identity. However what I take from this is they were trying again to turn him into the joker after being the red hood, very poetic.
He's saved as barb and bruce turn up only for them to be attack by the joker zombies and batman seems not not care about killing them becuase let's be honest they are too far gone. jason blames bruce for all of this and is left in barbs apartmen as bruce goes off to do his thing and jason finally decides it is time to heal looking at how barbara did it and he has a network now to help him. I'm not sure how i feel about the kiss but it is a tender moment and I am glad she backed away after. Bruce seems to have worked it out that missing comedians and clowns are turned into the joker and that could be a lead as he looks at alaska.
