2022’s umpteenth Pinocchio movie just dropped, and given that Guillermo Del Toro’s name is in the title, it’s not what you expect. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is packed with all of your favorite Pinocchio things, from Christianity and Christ allegories to commentary on Mussolini and fascist regimes. Wait… Those aren’t your favorite Pinocchio things?!
Despite the incredible beauty of del Toro’s Pinocchio, it bogs itself down with “unnecessary” themes just for themes’ sake, detracting from the emotion and heart of the story in order to wrap it in layers that do not fit it.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is a stop-motion adaptation of, you guessed it, Pinocchio. Directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson and written by del Toro and Patrick McHale (of Adventure Time and Over the Garden Wall fame), this adaptation puts a darker spin on the subject matter than we’re used to, inching closer to the story’s original roots in Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio from 1883 as opposed to more modern Disney adaptations. Del Toro also puts his own twists on the themes, presenting a slightly different journey for Pinocchio than what we’re used to.

A father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (or simply Pinocchio) is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson (in his feature directorial debut) with a screenplay by del Toro and Patrick McHale from a story by del Toro and Matthew Robbins. Based on Gris Grimly's design from his 2002 edition of the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, it reimagines the story in 1930s Fascist Italy as "a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father's expectations, learning the true meaning of life." It stars the voices of Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.
