The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first person, adventure, puzzle game that revolves around the mystery behind the disappearance of a boy by the name of Ethan Carter along with those who were related to him (including his whole family). The player takes control of a detective named Paul Prospero who one day receives a disturbing letter from Ethan and immediately heads to Ethan's hometown known as Red Creek Valley to investigate and search for Ethan in an effort to keep him safe. Upon his arrival, Paul realizes that the situation there is even worse than he originally though and could have imagined as Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder which seems to be a part of a series of strange murders that took place there recently. Paul quickly learns that Ethan and his family have been harboring a dark secret which was the source of some of these strange occurrences. This made it clear to Paul that he had to use all of his skills, wit and knowledge to figure out what's really going on in Red Creek Valley and find Ethan so that he can take him somewhere safe. It turns out that Paul has a few tricks up his sleeves and utilizes his supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead to discover the mystery behind the many corpses,. the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley and the fate of Ethan Carter himself.
The gameplay in this game is quite simple and easy to learn as the game is primarily a walking simulator with some puzzle elements to it. The game takes place in the town of Red Creek Valley which is an open world environment that the player can freely explore at their leisure while discovering more about the strange occurrences that recently took place there. The mechanics are slowly revealed to the player as they explore and investigate the various mysteries littered throughout the world, however, a lot of them have to be solved using the player's intuition. Solving the various deaths of Ethan's family members will move the story forward, however, the order in which the player tackles them is completely up to them. The investigations are usually started by the player coming upon a dead body and using Paul's paranormal abilities in order to ultimately recreate the events leading up to that person's death which reveals various details of the overarching story. Thankfully, the player doesn't really have to memorize the controls as they are usually provided to them by the game whenever an action can/needs to be completed, however, most actions are completed using the A button. Overall, the game is relaxing during most of the sections and solving the mystery behind Ethan's disappearance and his family's unfortunate demise is quite captivating during the course of the game.
Finally, with regards to the achievements in this game: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter includes a total of 14 achievements for a total of 1000 GS. Most of the achievements are related to the story and solving the murders of Ethan's family members, however, there are a few that are considered to be miscellaneous and missable. The good thing is that the game does allow you jump back in and rush to any specific area where you may have missed a certain achievement which means that you can easily play through the game blind during your first run and then jump back in to clean up and missed achievements. That being said, this is a fairly easy completion that should take you around 3 to 4 hours.
