Square Enix and Jupiter collaborated on The World Ends with You, a Nintendo DS action role-playing game. This game is set in Tokyo's modern-day Shibuya shopping district and incorporates stylized imagery and urban fantasy aspects inspired by Shibuya and its young culture. Elements from Jupiter's previous portable game, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, were used in the development. In July 2007, it was released in Japan, followed by PAL countries and North America in April 2008. Later, in 2012, h.a.n.d. released an enhanced port for mobile devices called The World Ends with You: Solo Remix, and in 2018, another updated port for the Nintendo Switch was released worldwide.
The protagonist, Neku Sakuraba, and his companions are compelled to compete in the Reapers' Game, a week-long game that will determine their fate. Many of the Nintendo DS's unique characteristics are utilised in the battle system, including combat on both screens and attacks done by particular actions on the touchscreen or by shouting into the microphone. Fashion, food, and cell phones are all important parts of Japanese youth culture in the missions and character advancement.
The game is set in a fictionalised version of Tokyo's Shibuya commercial area. While life carries on in the Realground, the chosen dead are transported to the Underground, an other dimension of existence. The Reapers' Game is also held at the UG. The deceased receive the opportunity to compete for the prize of being brought back to life or transcending to a higher form of spiritual existence by donating their most prized object to enter the Game. The majority of individuals who choose to transcend become Reapers, future Games' opponents. Each Game lasts a week and is a competition to determine humanity's worth. The Composer, a god-like force who maintains Shibuya, has devised rules for the players to follow. The Conductor, another Reaper, assigns other Reapers to disrupt the players' attempts. Failure to accomplish a mission will disperse the player's or Reaper's mind and spirit, effectively deleting their existence.
Each Game is a week-long competition to determine humanity's worth. The Composer, a god-like entity who keeps Shibuya running, creates rules for the players to follow. The Conductor, another Reaper, assigns other Reapers to sabotage the players' attempts. Failure to accomplish a mission will scatter the player's or Reaper's mind and spirit, effectively erasing their existence.
The World Ends with You is an action role-playing game divided into three chapters based on Neku's participation in the Reapers' Game for three weeks, with each chapter divided further by each day of the week. The player guides Neku and his companion through Shibuya in order to achieve each day's goal. Although most missions require Neku and his partner to complete them within a specified amount of time, the player's timer is unrelated to the passage of time.
Shibuya is divided into various districts, some of which may be closed on certain days or blocked by a wall that can only be lifted by complying with a neighbouring Reaper's request, such as erasing Noise insignia, wearing a specific brand of clothes, or carrying an item. By activating a specific pin, Neku can scan the area. This scan reveals the non-player characters' ideas and memes in the Realground, as well as indications that may help advance the plot. Random Noise symbols float throughout the area or, in certain circumstances, float around a specific character, according to the scan. By touching Noise symbols, the player begins a conflict; each sign represents one round of combat. Selecting more than one Noise symbol at a time initiates a multi-round combat (referred to in-game as numerous noise "reductions") that steadily increases in difficulty while also increasing the rewards for success. The rewards granted change depending on the complexity of the Noise and the quantity of health Neku and his partner have.
