♫Theme from SUPER MARIO BROS. (Tetris DS) SNES Arrangement - NintendoComplete
This is my arrangement of the theme from Super Mario Bros., as it was remixed for Nintendo's 2006 DS game Tetris DS. I have arranged it for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES console.
Tetris DS features a lot of neat mixes of classic 8-bit Nintendo themes, but its electronic/dance-style remix of the original Super Mario stuck in my head a long time after I'd been done with the game itself. So, like so many of the mixes that I do, I figured, why not give it a try? And here we are.
I couldn't mirror the DS game's track because the SNES simply doesn't have the grunt to do it. The SNES can only handle eight simultaneously voices, so this required a fair amount of adaptating. In arranging the song, I simplified the beat, bridged a lot of chords, and outright changed many of the instruments (and some of their timing patterns) to suit my purposes.
It was pretty neat to work on a Mario track. Thinking on it now, I'm kinda surprised I haven't done one until now.
I'm also really excited that I finally had a good opportunity to use some of that early 90s lately bass sound. It scratches those deep pitch itches pretty nicely. I was tempted to also use the famous "quack" sound from Whigfield's Saturday Night, but I had to show restraint at some point ;)
