Played through as Saizo on the default difficulty level.
Breaker's Revenge was the third and final game in Visco's short-lived arcade fighter series, following Breakers in 1996 (MVS/AES) and Breakers CD in 1997.
It's also among the first of the Neo Geo games to display a bios splash screen proclaiming it as "Giga Power Pro-Gear Spec," which was a fancy way of hyping up the game's use of bank switching to allow the system to address larger chunks of memory than was before possible - up to approximately 700 megabits (about 90 megabytes) of ROM.
Revenge doesn't do much to change up the formula. The newly introduced Saizo provides some fun diversity to the roster, some minor edits have been made to the graphics (most notably on the splash screens), and the game's systems have again been slightly rebalanced.
Breakers CD already did much of what is on offer in Revenge, but considering what a small audience the CD version of the game had, it was great that the improved game was made available as a coin-op. (No AES version this time around, though!) Saizo's style feels very different from how the rest of the cast plays, so if you're into Breakers, his inclusion alone will give you plenty to sink your teeth into.
As an incremental upgrade of an incremental upgrade, if you've played Breakers and Breakers CD, you've seen most of this before. But like the Street Fighter II games, if you're a fan, each one offers something worthwhile to keep you hooked.
It's not as technical as SFA3 or The Last Blade 2, it's far less content-dense than Marvel vs. Capcom, and the graphics and sound in no way match the top arcade fighters from 1998, but Breakers never had its eye on the throne. It never tries to do anything more than provide people with an accessible, flashy, and fun fighter, and in that, it succeeds brilliantly.
There are few fighting games that are as plain *fun* as this, and I'm so glad the series is getting another shot with the Breakers Collection due out later this year.
