You can use the switch in the kitchen area to knock out everyone in the house, making it easier to pick up loot items, but it isn't required.
This chapter has a beginning area that has 5 loot items you need to pick up before you vault the wall that leads into the brothel.
Additionally, it may be useful to know that you should have 26 loots once you clear the bottom floor and 42 loots when you go through the passage behind the painting. There is one final loot item after you acquire the book and begin your trip out.
