This GPU is incredible! - Intel Xe HPC Ponte Vecchio graphics card was unveiled
14At the Intel Unleashed event, news on the new Intel Xe gpu were expected. Unfortunately, this didn' t happen, however, a new interesting graphics card was unveiled.
At the event, CEO Pat Gelsinger showed the new Xe-HPC Ponte Vecchio graphics card.
Raja Koduri, senior vice president, chief architect, and general manager of Architecture, Graphics, and Software at Intel Corporation, posted on his twitter account a small presentation on the development of the new creation that he describes as the most majestic engineering project on which Intel worked. He also underlined how the project saw the light and was completed in just about 2 years, a record time if we think how innovative and complex the work has been.
Defined by Intel as an XPU, it is based on the Xe HPC architecture. It is capable of achieving computational performance superior to the petaflop, a power that has been enclosed in just one palm of hand.
If you make the comparison, 30 years ago, an equivalent computing power required a large room with a series of servers inside.
The Intel graphics chip is made up of over 100 billion transistors, using up to 47 combined tiles called "magical tiles".
At the base of the new graphics card, as mentioned before, is Ponte Vecchio, a project dedicated to exascale supercomputers, designed for loads of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the project will be exploitable by developers through oneAPI, the unified API on which Intel is spending a lot of its energy that will make the process easier for the future development of all its CPU and GPU architectures.
In this preview no other details have been revealed, what is sure that Intel Ponte Vecchio will have to contend with two other projects that are also modular, namely Nvidia Hopper and AMD CDNA2.
