Did you know that Mario was named after Nintendo's landlord in 1981? While developing Donkey Kong, Nintendo was struggling financially and asked their Seattle office landlord, an Italian man named Mario Segale, for a rent extension. Although initially upset, Segale agreed, which led the developers to rename the main character from Jumpman to Mario in his honor. Nearly 12 years later, Segale humorously mentioned to the Seattle Times that he was still waiting for his royalty checks.
