The Nintendo Switch 2, which will be released worldwide on June 5, 2025, marks a significant step in Nintendo's console history. Priced at €469.99 (or €509.99 bundled with "Mario Kart World"), it relies on improved hardware, new features, and an expanded game portfolio to build on the success of its predecessor.
The Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution, HDR10, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. 4K at 60fps is possible in TV mode. A specially developed Nvidia chip supports DLSS and ray tracing, promising a tenfold performance improvement over the original Switch. The internal storage is 256GB and can be expanded with microSD ExpressCards. Battery life ranges from 2 to 6.5 hours.
The redesigned Joy-Cons are magnetically attached, are larger, and feature a "C" button for the integrated "GameChat" voice and video chat feature. An innovative mouse function allows the controllers to be swiped across a surface to use them like a computer mouse. The Joy-Cons' battery life is approximately 20 hours.
At launch, the Switch 2 will offer titles such as "Mario Kart World," which introduces open-world elements to the series for the first time, as well as "Donkey Kong Bananza" and "Kirby Air Riders." Remastered versions of games such as "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition" will also be available. The console is largely backward compatible with games and controllers from the first Switch generation.
Nintendo forecasts sales of 15 million units by March 2026 and expects operating profit to increase by 13% to 320 billion yen. However, there has been criticism of the pricing: The console is 50% more expensive than its predecessor, and game prices of up to €90 are causing discontent. Fans also complain about the limited customization options in the menu, which only offers light and dark themes at launch.
