Nintendo has been using friend codes ever since the Wii launched in 2006. This was carried over to the Nintendo 3DS which released in 2011. Then when 2012 saw the release of the Wii U and this time, Nintendo did not use friend codes. However, on March 3, 2017 when Nintendo Switch came out, they went back to using friend codes. It turns out, there was a reason for doing so.
