The Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant, which means it is the leftover material from an exploded star. The star exploded in 1054 CE and was observed by ancient astronomers in China, Japan, and possibly North America¹. The nebula is about 6,500 light-years away from Earth and has a diameter of about 11 light-years².

The Crab Nebula looks so beautiful because it has different colors and structures that are visible in different wavelengths of light. The red-orange filaments are made of ionized gas, mostly hydrogen and sulfur, that was ejected by the star during the explosion³. The blue glow is from electrons moving at high speeds around magnetic fields, creating synchrotron radiation⁴. The yellow-white and green regions are from dust grains that emit infrared light⁵. The nebula also contains a pulsar, which is a rapidly spinning neutron star that emits beams of radiation from its poles
