It stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as American astronauts who attempt to return to Earth after the destruction of their Space Shuttle in orbit.
In the film Gravity, the Space Shuttle Explorer, led by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski and carrying Dr. Ryan Stone on her first mission, is in Earth orbit to service the Hubble Space Telescope. During a spacewalk, they receive a warning about rapidly expanding space debris caused by the Russians shooting down a satellite, and Mission Control orders their immediate return. Debris hits the shuttle, leaving Stone tumbling in space. Kowalski rescues her, and they find the shuttle damaged, with the crew dead. They aim for the International Space Station (ISS) using a maneuvering unit, with a limited time before the debris returns. Along the way, they discuss Stone's tragic past. They reach the ISS, finding it evacuated, and consider using a damaged Soyuz spacecraft to reach the nearby Tiangong space station. Tensions rise when their tether snags, leading to Kowalski's sacrifice, and Stone's return to the ISS.
