So I just watched Heavy Metal a day ago, and I have to say...am I the only one who thinks it isn't that great? I mean, sure, the soundtrack is dandy and some of the animation is good (did the guy behind the cover for Streets Of Fire do this?), but the story, as flimsy as it is, gets completely lost as it goes on. Everything just gets more and more irrelevant as the film crawls to its conclusion, and the ending makes no sense. So the Lok-Nar's plan was to tell this girl stories about how he always wins before he kills her, because apparently she's the final hope that can stand in her way...but by telling a story in a which the Lok-Nar is destroyed in the past, it blows up in the present? What?

You know, I'm not going to pretend Heavy Metal 2000 was anything but a hackneyed waste of time, but at least it had a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end. But fuck me. When I was around during the start of the DVD era, this was one of the first big re-releases. That picture of the valkyrie on the cover is burned into my brain. Because it's awesome. But...I dunno. I think this was outclassed even by films back then. Rock 'n' Rule is way, way better. Has a much better connection to its music and it has better characters. Which is to say, it has characters.

And, y'know, not to get all PC killjoy, but why is it that of the six women in Heavy Metal that the only one who doesn't undress at some point is because she's fourteen or fifteen? It's discouraging to think that in the future when we have all these alien races sitting and watching show trials, and these massive space citadels with new drugs and all that sort of thing, that women are only there to be fucked? I can accept the repeated appearance of cartoon tittays. I mean, who doesn't like that, but the way the sociopolitical standards of all these space stories was shaped makes absolutely no sense. Also I'm pretty sure the vaginas didn't look right.

Pretty sure.
