Back in the days of yor Squaresoft (before ENIX merger) was dipping their toes into making non-rpg's. I played several, Tobal No.1 of course, Einhander and Bushido Blade. To their credit I liked all 3.

Tobal No.1 was their first stab at a 3D fighter, and well I loved it. They weren't stupid, and packed the game with a Final Fantasy 7 demo disk, most people probably bought it for the demo rather than the game itself.. Smooth 60 FPS with shading and a few textures thrown in here and there. Even with the lack of textures the frame rate made it look great and I still like the look today. Excellent character design from Akira Toriyama. A really diverse soundtrack with a few stand out tracks. The game controlled like virtua fighter but if virtua fighter was easier to control. You have full 3D movement and a grappling system that lets you push and pull characters around. The game has I think 4 unlockable characters. The three bosses and Toriyama Robo, unlocking him is quite difficult, you have to be the last stage of the quest mode which has about 100 rooms if I remember right. The gameplay totally holds up. Gren Kutz was my best character and I remember I had mastered him and his variations to an absurd degree in the past. Most of the skill is gone but even having no played the game in over 20 years some of it remains. Sadly Square never released Tobal 2 in the US. Something I never forgave them for. But if you are a fighting game fan I think you owe it to yourself to give this game a spin.
