On this day in 1270, Yekuno Amlak was crowned the emperor of Ethiopia following his killing of the last Zagwe king. Yekuno Amlak’s accession to the throne marked the beginning of the Solomonic Dynasty that ruled Ethiopia for over 700 years until 1974 and which is best known today for its last emperor, Haile Selassie.
