On this day, a groundbreaking new opera was performed for the first time in an opera house that the work’s composer was banned from entering. On September 22nd, 1869, Richard Wagner’s opera Das Rheingold had its world premiere at the National Theatre Munich. Wagner intended Das Rheingold to be the first of four operas in his epic Ring Cycle, and he wanted to wait until all four operas were ready before staging them. Unfortunately, Wagner was so heavily indebted to his royal patron, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, that Ludwig technically owned the copyright to Das Rheingold, and he wanted to stage it right away. Wagner did everything he could to sabotage the production and he was eventually banned from the opera house. Despite his wishes, the show went on without Wagner, and the world was treated to the first production of his exciting new work.
