On this day, an author who penned a book that is considered by some to be the “Great American Novel” was born. On September 24th, 1896, F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Although he is considered one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, Fitzgerald produced only four novels in his life. Luckily for him, his first two novels were critical and commercial successes that propelled him into the cultural elite of the 1920’s. However, his third novel “The Great Gatsby” was a commercial failure, and he had no luck with his final novel either. Fitzgerald began to drink heavily and moved to Hollywood where he tried and failed to launch a career as a screenwriter. He died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of 44, and, as is often the case, his novels became extremely popular only after his death, with Gatsby in particular now considered one of the greatest American novels ever.
