Edit: Guess you don't even need to be mid air to do this. just charge the attack then jump.

Press and hold the attack button while mid air right before you hit the ground. Keep holding the attack button on the ground then jump. It needs to be timed correctly or you won't hover in place without losing endurance.

Also with Nems/Hildas wep you can hit the ground with no damage as long as you hold the attack button before hitting the ground.
