The storyline that ties these events together is ridiculous, but not impossible to follow. This time around, artificial intelligence (a self-aware techno-being known as the Entity) plays a pivotal role as the main antagonist. It's a global threat that no country is safe from, capable of shutting down computer networks and stifling free speech.

Before it can become too powerful or falls into the wrong hands, Hunt and his IMF team are committed to destroying the Entity. Hunt is warned by his former boss Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) to toe the line and help the United States government take control of the Entity and the emerging global order.

There are a lot of moving parts there, what with all the people, betrayals, chases, fights, escapes, and explosions. Despite clocking in at well over two hours (and this is only Part 1), the film never fades in interest. As a screenwriter first and foremost, McQuarrie skillfully builds and then releases tension at just the right moments throughout the story.
