Tomb Raider, I Am Not - Let's Play Hieroglyphika - Gameplay Part 1
121Hieroglyphika is a roguelike game completely without text but with pictograms. It's turn based, with unique abilities that you can pick up from sarcophagi, enemies, breakable pots, etc... as well as random pieces of equipment. It's a bit slow, and extremely merciless, but it's definitely one of the best traditional roguelikes I've seen in quite some time.
You get lost in an ancient egyptian pyramid buried deep under the sand of the desert and full of traps and monstrous beings. Decrypt hieroglyphs to learn spells and to understand the magical nature of artifacts.
GAMEPLAY
Fight your way through dangerous corridors down to the deeper levels of the pyramid in a turn-based fashion. Open sarcophagi or kill enemies and you will find loot. Cast the spells of the dead. Defend yourself with ancient shields. Push your enemies into bottomless pits. Or strike them down with enchanted weapons.
Your stats and abilities depend on which items you choose to equip. The stats scale with the level in which the items were found in. The deeper the level the more powerful the item. But surviving isn't simply a matter of better stats. Many items come with a merit and a drawback. And their abilities are quite unique. You have to make the best use of them in order to stand a chance of survival.
Highlighted tiles show you which objects are interactable in your current turn. Point the mouse cursor over them to see the available actions. Many actions take more than one turn to cool down before you can use them again. So you have to think ahead. Learn the abilities and behaviour of your enemies. Like yourself they dispose of diverse move-, attack- and defense-patterns.
You will often find yourself in unfavourable situations which require careful consideration. The pyramid is rigged with traps. Especially beware of trap plates which can trigger all traps on the screen at once causing sudden bursts of chaos.
You are an explorer. There is no hand-holding of any kind. Figure out the mechanics and rules on your own. Be attentive and creative. Find novel solutions to odd combinations of random events.
