Top 10 Reasons Why Command And Conquer Generals 2 Was Cancelled Full Analysis 2020
Ok I have been doing research by reading old articles with sources attached to EA's blog regarding the cancellation of Generals 2 here are the reasons which I have garnered so far and I would like the community to help me add more reasons if that is not included in this post.
1. Free to play game model which really upset the alpha testers because they knew it was basically pay to win :(
2. Loot crate system and even money being spent on those during the alpha stage
3. Different commanders for specific attributions like attack commander defense commander etc
4. Alpha testers gave their feedback and it was mostly negative they didnt enjoy the experience of generals 2 citing it was free to play and indirectly pay to win especially when money was invested during alpha by the players into the loot box system.
5. Announcing campaigns for each general was very late (contributed by u/wadprime)
6. Lots of generals meant a bigger world to control and they wanted to make it an MMO RTS in future with other command and conquer franchises into the mix (Contributed by u/wadprime)
7. Implementing the Frostbite engine into the game system was extremely hard work unlike Sage RTS engine setup hence issues arose in-unit balancing, pathfinding and basic gameplay mechanics (Contributed by u/Jonny_dr)
8. Loot box system strategy came from the Higher authority seeing in line with FIFA franchise that benefited the most from it hence even though the choice of free to play was not favored by the development team it was forced upon them to accept (Contributed by u/stephanovich)
9. Testing for the alpha testers was a hurdle cause they had to buy different units and generals and grind it out hence balancing was a huge problem (Contributed by u/Jonny_dr)
10. Too much content was missing from the base game like Units for each faction as the development team decided to bring them out in episodic format (DLC) in future but this felt like the base game was incomplete (Contributed by u/wadprime)
11. Pathfinding was done server-side, therefore units did not respond quickly and the game felt very sluggish (Contributed by u/Renzzie)
Note - the source of actual money being spent on the loot box system has been taken from the article https://www.kitguru.net/gaming/jon-martindale/command-and-conquer-generals-2-cancelled-dev-shuttered/ however it is to be noted that the money spent by players on loot boxes during the alpha stage was refunded by EA games.
