3EarthBound, conocido en Japón como Mother 2: Giygas Strikes Back (ＭＯＴＨＥＲ２マザーツーギーグの逆襲ぎゃくしゅう Mazā Tsu Gīgu no Gyakushū, en español: Mother 2: Giygas Contraataca) es un videojuego de rol creado en 1994 para la consola SNES de Nintendo. A diferencia de otros juegos de ese tipo, sitúa la historia en un contexto "real" y contemporáneo. Es la segunda entrega de la saga y la única que salió de Japón. En el 2006 se lanzó una secuela para el mercado japonés llamada Mother 3. En 2013 se lanzó en la eShop de Wii U después de muchas peticiones por parte de los fans.
En el juego no se adquieren armas convencionales de otros juegos de rol, como espadas y arcos, sino yo-yos, bates de béisbol, sartenes o tirachinas, y en vez de armaduras se equipan trajes de deporte o vestidos, dando un giro total al clásico concepto de juego de rol.
También hay que hablar de los efectos negativos, tales como "envenenenado", "enchampiñonado", "extraño" o "insolado" que no sólo se adquieren en batalla, sino en el ambiente, como es el caso de "insolado", que se adquiere en ambientes calurosos como en Dusty Dunes Desert, un desierto que hay entre Threed y Fourside.
Además, en vez de magia, se tienen poderes psíquicos llamados PSI (PK en las versiones japonesas), habiéndolos de diferentes tipos y efectos. Por ejemplo: PSI Fire, que causa daños en una fila de enemigos, PSI Brainshock que hace que el enemigo se sienta "extraño", o el PSI Flash de Ness que causa una gran cantidad de efectos sobre los enemigos, e incluso puede llegar a derrotarlos.
The game had a lengthy development period which spanned five years. Its making involved a number of Japanese luminaries, including writer Shigesato Itoi, musician/songwriter Keiichi Suzuki, sound designer Hirokazu Tanaka, and future Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. Themed around an idiosyncratic portrayal of Americana and Western culture, it subverted popular role-playing game traditions by featuring a real world setting while parodying numerous staples of the genre. Itoi, who directed the game, wanted it to reach non-gamers with its intentionally goofy tone. It was heavily marketed upon release via a promotional campaign which sardonically proclaimed "this game stinks".
Initial reviewers had little praise for EarthBound in the United States, where it sold half as many copies as in Japan. Critics credit this to a combination of the game's simple graphics, the satirical marketing campaign, and a lack of market interest in the genre. In the ensuing years, a dedicated fan community spawned which advocated for the series. Starting in 1999, Ness became a featured character in each of the Super Smash Bros. series of video games which furthered public knowledge of EarthBound. In 2013, EarthBound was reissued and given a worldwide release for the Wii U Virtual Console following many years of fan lobbying, marking its debut in many territories including Europe. Upon retrospection, the game received wide critical acclaim, and was deemed by many a timeless classic. A Japan-only sequel, Mother 3, was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2006.
