The Arcade game After Burner was published by Sega in 1987 and featured an F-14 fighter jet. It was influenced by Top Gun and its sequel G-LOC was successful as well.
The game was ported to the Sega Master System in 1988 and was one of the first games to be released on the system. It was also released on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990. The game was also ported to the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.The player controls an F-14 Tomcat jet fighter and must destroy enemy aircraft while avoiding missiles fired by them. The player can fire missiles at enemy aircraft and ground targets such as fuel tanks and buildings. The player can also use their machine guns against enemy aircraft but this is not recommended as it uses up ammunition quickly. The game has three levels of difficulty: easy, medium and hard. Each level has a different number of enemies that must be destroyed before moving on to the next level. There are three stages in each level with each stage having a different number of enemies that must be destroyed before moving on to the next stage.
