During the evening of June 13, 1968, a powerful EF4 tornado struck the city of Dallas, in the state of Texas. It was part of a small two-day tornado outbreak that occurred in the area and reached a maximum width of 200 yards (182,88 m). The tornado was unusual because it tracked primarily southeast, as opposed to the usual northeast. Overall, the tornado killed 53 people (with an additional seven indirect deaths), injured some 1,718 others, and caused damages amounting to a total of $1.2 billion. Many local residents and storm chasers used firearms and stationary automatic heavy-caliber tripod-mounted weaponries against the tornado (The latter soon was found out to be ineffective due to limited range and cost to production).
