Welcome to the end of chapter 6 and my playthrough of Toukiden 2. (There is a chapter 7 in the game, but it's a post-game thing. I'm ending the playthrough where the main narrative ends.)

Anyway, to explain what I was talking about near the end of the final boss in more detail, the final bosses of Age of Demons and Kiwami, I feel, were disappointments from a narrative viewpoint. Their threat was presented clearly in the narrative, yes, but the Oni that served as the final bosses had no real character or personality, and fell flat as villains.

There's a formula to creating an effective villains, giving them character, motivation, etc. Age of Demons and Kiwami didn't follow it with their main antagonists. Kiwami even had that Kyokei girl as an antagonist with actual dialogue and character, but she gets brushed late-game aside to make way for a final boss who, I feel, fell quite flat due to its lack of real character.

Of course, it's possible to create an effective villain with no clear personality and no dialogue, Lavos from Chrono Trigger for example, but the final bosses of Age of Demons and Kiwami fell far short of Lavos' lofty example.
