From TVtropes:

Following the Liberl arc in Nihon Falcom's long-running Legend of Heroes series of Eastern RPGs, Trails of Cold Steel and its sequel Trails of Cold Steel II are a game changer for two reasons: The story moves to the Empire of Erebonia, whose conflicts have simmered in the background since Trails in the Sky, and the game itself is in full 3D for the first time ever. The game stars Rean Schwarzer, a new student at the Thors Military Academy in the small college town of Trista, who finds himself placed into a special group, Class VII. There, he faces not only classes and tests but a student body fractured by the political divisions in Erebonia, a willful teacher with an unorthodox approach to education, and his own insecurity. And in the background, the rumor of war....
Trails of Cold Steel is the third arc in the series begun by Trails in the Sky and takes place in roughly the same time frame as Zero no Kiseki and its sequel, Ao no Kiseki. The first game in the arc was released on December 22, 2015, courtesy of XSEED Games under the title Trails of Cold Steel. XSEED brought over the second game on September 6, 2016. In December 2015 Falcom formally announced the development of a third game in the arc

From Amazon:

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom's storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. With a standalone story that also delves into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, players can enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed "ARCUS" system, and take part in dramatic events that stand to shift the balance of power between Erebonia's feuding nobility and commoners.
