Hey guys! This is my review of Transformers: Prime for the Wii U rated Everyone 10 and up. The game is based on the television series of the same name,
You fight against the evil forces of the Decepticons' which, without revealing too much of the story, are developing a plan to unleash a secret weapon on planet Earth.
You control characters from Team Prime - Optimus Prime, Arcee, Bulkhead, Bumblebee and Ratchet.
The game plays like a combination of a beat em up, racing game, and shooter.
The majority of the characters have the same basic fighting moveset, aside from button mashing, There are button combos, but nothing too advanced. which is actually not bad, since I feel there is no reason for anything more advanced in this game.
You are also able to lock-in to your enemies and shoot rather seamlessly. It does take a bit more time to destroy enemies this way, but it helps out a lot when the decepticons try to fly away from you.
The Wii U gamepad features an option to upgrade your weapon for a temporary moment, which allows you to gain added power to your character and this is useful in bossfights. But we will talking about the gamepad in a second.
A real neat feature to each character is the ability to to transform and use your vehicle attack to break enemy shields to unload some major damage.
Vehicle mode is also used to make big jumps in the platforming stages, but it also has its own featured stages, where you use the Wii U gamepad to steer and control your vehicle. While this is a cool feature, sometimes the control on the steering feels a little delayed. Also, some of the stages, (most particulary a cave stage) have bridges that are either too easy to fall off, or edges that you can barely see. There is no way to slow down or brake on these stages, so I found myself having to repeat some of these stages several times.
Now about the Wii U gamepad. The interface of the gamepad is simple, it gives out basic information and stats on your transformer as well as the button to upgrade your weapon, the only other thing it does is allow you to steer your vehicle.
First lets get The problems I had with this game out of the way, the levels felt a little short at times, and the driving stages while not bad, they just sometimes felt rushed. and At times, I felt like I was playing a game that had motion controls thrown in it just to have it, during these driving stages. I feel the gamepad was used creatively, however it just wasn't as solid as the rest of the game. Other than that, I have no other complaints.
Now to talk about things I liked about the game. To begin with, I was glad that they had the voice actors from the series in the game, most importantly Peter Cullen and Frank Welker.. It definitely adds to the game's environment and provides Also, the graphics are not bad at all. Aside from the human characters (which look cartoony), the Autobots and Decepticons look great. The cutscenes featured awesome fighting action that only transformers could provide. In addition to that, the music of the game was pretty epic in my opinion. As I mentioned, the overall gameplay was simple. I think if it had been anymore advanced it would have felt out of place, the brawling is easy and satisfying, as well as the shooting. Finally, The camera was also easy to control and never really got in the way of gameplay.
The boss fights at times were tricky, however, when you failed your mission you are given the option for more health if you continue. The games way of holding your hand and helping you. Could they have done something else for this game? Perhaps a true experience or weapon upgrade system for each autobot? Sure? But was it necessary? Not really, this game is probably as good as it could get.
AS far as extras go, there are several achievements in the game, that provide re-playability to what was a relatively short game. Also, there is a multiplayer mode, and while I am a little disappointed that there was no online multiplayer for this game, once again I feel that this game is just feels natural being basic and not more advanced than it is.
