Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 in 2006, marking the third installment of the series. A few years later, in 2014, it was made available for download on the PlayStation Network. More recently, it was announced that it would be receiving a remaster in 2025, offering its fantastic story, of course, with completely reworked graphics and gameplay.
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army will transport us to 1930s Japan during the Taisho era. A time and place where we take control of Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, a young Japanese detective who, along with his faithful cat, Gouto-Douji, works at the Narumi Detective Agency, led by Chief Detective Shohei Narumi.
But our protagonist is no ordinary detective; his duty is to protect Japan from supernatural threats.
During a routine investigation for the Agency, Raidou and Narumi meet with their client, a young high school student named Kaya Daidōji. She asks the pair to end her existence, but before Raidou and Narumi can investigate further, soldiers in armor and red capes appear and kidnap Kaya. Now they must uncover the truth behind these enigmatic events.
In terms of gameplay, the first thing that stands out in this installment is its combat system, which leaves behind the turn-based role-playing so iconic to the series to focus on real-time action. These battles see us take control of Raidou Kuzunoha, who will have a wide arsenal of weapons such as a katana for close combat and a pistol for ranged combat. Of course, we will also have access to demonic summons.
The battles take place in small, delimited areas that you will enter during the exploration of the dungeons. Additionally, we can visit different urban locations while we investigate.
Demons are a fundamental tool, as they lend us their mystical powers and provide resistances as well as elemental weaknesses. They will not only fight with us, but we can also fuse them to obtain even more powerful creatures, or with our sword or pistol to obtain even more power.
Demons also have a loyalty subsystem in which we must use them during combat. The more we do this, the more loyal they become. Once we reach a certain point, we unlock a special attack with which we can overwhelm our enemies.
