Today, boys and girls, I bring you something very special: the work that first put George Orwell one the map: his account of being poor in the cities and on the streets in France and England, and of the miserable working and living conditions thereof. Having spent time as a plongeur (dishwasher) for multiple ratty hotels, Orwell here provides an account of the utter soul-crushing drudgery of such work, and how little purpose it truly serves. Here is a passage (Chapter XXII, to be exact) that resonates very much with me, having done my share of menial, demeaning grunt work for a number of unpleasant masters myself.
Pictured is The Dishwasher, from the video games of the same name; both for fun and to illustrate how this sort of work really makes you feel.
