Tonight, I recorded some footage from Mario Kart Double Dash as a test to see how well the capture card I use works with Gamecube games. The result? It works. But here's the catch - I'm not using a capture card that works with component.

A long time ago, there was this special promotion that Nintendo had that would get you about $1 for every $10 you spent on the Nintendo eShop if you had the Black Wii U that was available at launch. It wasn't a huge deal for me early on, because as we all know the Wii U became notorious for software droughts and poor sales. However, somewhere between 2013-2014, it became a boon for indie titles such as Shovel Knight and Blok Drop U, with more and more on the way. And because I was eligible for this program each indie game I purchased let me rack up points so I could earn store credit, which I then, in turn, used to buy either more eShop games or Virtual Console games (and weirdly enough, the free promotion that was available with Mario Kart 8 also got me points).

So basically, I had a lot of files I needed to keep stored.

One day, it became a pain in the ass to manage on the system's storage, so I went out and bought an external hard drive to store each and every eShop game. At the time, I thought, "1TB is more than enough, right?". It was. And it worked really well until just a few weeks ago, where I had a pain in the ass even using the Xenoblade X data packs. Then I had problems uploading Smash Wii U replays. THEN I had problems even loading Super Mario Maker, which I had downloaded from the eShop. All because my hard drive is finnicky as fuck.

Nintendo, this is why Sony and Microsoft have those huge-ass 500GB hard drives built in to their systems. Take notes for NX.

Meanwhile, I was also busy trying to install the Homebrew Channel on my Wii and Nintendo 3DS, and while those have been pretty good successes (the novelty of playing NES Battletoads on the go is always a plus...?), the only purpose I would have for installing it on my vWii is for Nintendont, which would let me play Gamecube ISOs on my Wii U; i.e. for convenience and/or for recording. Problem was, those ISOs are huge and take up way too much space.

So when I remembered I had a 1TB external hard drive that wasn't doing shit, I nearly squeed.

Now, bear in mind, the only ISOs I've loaded so far are from games I currently own (Super Smash Bros. Melee, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and obviously Double Dash), and as far as Gamecube games go, I probably won't be loading any ISOs on there that I don't currently own. Anything prior to that, however, I consider fair game at this point. I may or may not record footage from various NES romhacks or old, Japan only SNES games (specifically, Panel de Pon) in the near future. (And no, I am not going to record Kaizo. Fuck that.)

So the moral of this story? I'm very rusty at Mario Kart: Double Dash.
