Twin Cobra" is a vertical scrolling shooting game developed by Toa Plan. In Japan, the game began operating as an arcade game marketed by Taito in 1987. The Japanese version was released under the title "Ultimate Tiger. It was later ported to various home video game consoles and digital devices.
It was a sequel to the company's "Tiger-Heli" (1985), in which the player controls his own ship, "Battle Tiger," with the goal of destroying a giant fortress.
A further sequel, "Twin Cobra II" (1995), was produced in 1995.
The game featured a well-balanced system that included the use of several different main shots, a powerful bomber that covered half the screen, and intense enemy attacks based mainly on high-speed bullets, thus completing one of the stylistic standards in vertical scrolling shooters.
Many followers of this work, such as "Raiden" (1990), appeared in later years.
According to Takenya Uemura, one of the developers, the goal was to create "a work that would directly contradict the opinion that difficult games are boring because they cannot be played for a long time. Following the success of "Flying Shark" (1987) the previous year, this title was a huge hit, establishing Toaplan as a leading arcade shooter game maker and leading to the release of many shooting games.
Originally designed for one player only (in the case of two players, they take turns playing), the game allows two players to play at the same time in the Japanese and foreign versions, which are described below.
