TWiP 434: Photography, Evolved.
Last week was chock full of interesting camera announcements. Previously we continually saw incremental, albeit much needed, advancements to our favorite camera systems. Now we’re seeing completely different form factors and implementations. Companies are beginning to reimagine what a camera can do, and as such changing what kinds of photos, we as image makers, can create.
DJI surprised everyone last week with their gimbal-stabilized, handheld, 4K, 12-megapixel “Osmo”. And an entirely new company called “Light” has been generating huge buzz with a camera that sports “sixteen lenses” that all shoot the same image simultaneously, then using onboard computational wizardry, create a what looks to be a stunning 50+ megapixel image.
Joining me this week to examine these new announcements are Sara France from SaraFrance.com, and Syl Area from PixSylated.com.
1. Meet DJI’s Osmo, a Robotic Handheld Camera
You know how awesome drone photography looks? DJI, a leading quadcopter maker, is putting some of that tech into the palm of our hands. On Thursday, it unveiled its first non-flying consumer product: a 4K camera on a stabilizing arm called Osmo.
2. Is the new Light L16 the future of photography?
A startup called Light has invented a camera that it says will put the power of a DSLR in your pocket. The trick? It’s new L16 is really 16 tiny cameras that work together.
3. Swiss TV Station Replaces Cameras with iPhones and Selfie Sticks
iPhones may not be very good at photographing lunar eclipses, but apparently they’re just fine for television news broadcasts. A local TV news station in Switzerland has ditched standard TV cameras to go 100% iPhone.
