Types of Rubber used in Respirators/Gas masks.
In this video I cover three of the very common types of Rubber used in respirators; latex, silicone and butyl.
Latex is flexible and decently strong, it can be made very thin and flexible or thicker and more rigid, the Soviets were big fans of making latex Rubber respirators.
Silicone is very soft, flexible and can even be made transparent, however it discolours easily and many chemicals can eat their way through it, it is great for half-face respirators for particulate protection but bad for military masks.
Butyl rubber is strong, mildly flexible and very corrosion resistant, it lasts longer than many other rubber types when exposed to blister agents or ammonia and is the ideal material for using when making respirators.
