It is the sequel to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and is the fourth and final installment in the Uncharted series starring Nathan Drake, as well as the last in the series to be developed by Naughty Dog.[

Three years after the events of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Nathan "Nate" Drake, now retired as a fortune hunter, has settled into a normal life with his wife Elena Fisher. His world is then turned upside down when his older brother Sam, long believed to be dead, suddenly reappears seeking Drake's help. Fifteen years prior, Drake, Sam, and another associate named Rafe Adler were searching for the long lost treasure of the pirate Henry Avery, allegedly worth over $400 million. In order to find the location of the treasure, the trio infiltrated a Panamanian prison and found a clue leading to an abandoned cathedral in Scotland. Unfortunately, during their escape, Sam was shot and captured, where he spent the next fifteen years in captivity. Sam then tells Drake that he managed to escape the prison with help from the druglord Hector Alcazar, but Hector demands half of Avery's treasure in return. In order to save Sam's life, Nate reluctantly returns to his life of fortune hunting, but lies to Elena by telling her he is taking a business trip to Malaysia.
Nate recruits Victor "Sully" Sullivan to assist them, and they head to a black market auction in Italy to steal a crucifix containing a clue to Avery's treasure. At the auction, they encounter Rafe, who has spent the past fifteen years continuing his search for the treasure, and has partnered with the head of the Shoreline mercenary company, Nadine Ross. Despite Rafe's warnings not to come between him and the treasure, Nate steals the crucifix. The crucifix contains a clue leading to a specific gravestone in the Scotland cathedral, which is now owned by Rafe. The trio infiltrates the cathedral and finds a map leading to King's Bay in Madagascar. With Rafe and Shoreline in hot pursuit, Nate discovers that Avery is the founder of the mythical pirate colony Libertalia, which holds the combined wealth of not just Avery, but countless other pirates. He manages to pinpoint the location of Libertalia to an island off the coast of Madagascar, but is confronted by Elena, who is furious that he lied to her and has returned to his dangerous life of fortune hunting. Nate instructs Sully to stay behind and watch over Elena while he and Sam head for Libertalia.
