Undercover Cops Alpha Renewal Version (Arcade) - (Rosa | 1cc | Longplay)
Hey folks, another 1cc by an underrated arcade company.
Undercover cops!
Honestly this beat em up is just lots of fun, it's more forgiving compared to final fight as well and the graphics are superb as it's riddled with detail, from the characters, stages and backgrounds. It's also done by part of the metal slug team so the graphics do feel a bit metal slug-ish.
Anyways on to the game, this is version is basically just the japanese version of the game. The world release of undercover cops removes some of the character move sets, the most notable one is air dash attacks and the special air moves which take away a chunk of your life. Other minor differences are the music and the background in stage 2.
The overall theme is interesting, it's post apocalyptic but it's so cheery and colorful that it doesn't feel like the world is doomed or anything. The graphics and music are also superb. The construction site and the underground area are my favorite areas as the stage backgrounds are quite gorgeous to look at.
Plot is pretty simple, the mayor says new work isn't looking so hot so he suggests hiring City Sweepers to rid Dr. Craybon and his organization. The characters are pretty rad too with some dark backstory, Zan (Claude) was a former karater master till he got banned for killing man in self defense. Matt (Bubba) was falsely accused of murder and was labelled a dangerous man. Rosa (Flame who's my favorite character of course!) detests evil after her lover was killed.
It's also a bit violent since there's blood and the mole people disintegrating when you hit them, in the assessment section where it tallies up the enemies you beat up. It shows mugshots of them all beat up an bruised. Gameplay is quite fair actually but once you reach stage 4 and the last the difficulty starts to spike but it stays quite fair. The move set for the players are also pretty funny. Zan uses karate but slaps enemies with his hands when he grapples enemies, Matt literally treats all the enemies as if they were footballs by throwing them or charging at enemies. Rosa is both silly and a little lewd since she attacks with her butt and thighs when performing air attacks. The special moves as well are pretty awesome and can get you out in a tight spot.
You can also bring recovery items with you throughout the entire stage which makes it even more fair but if you get a recovery item/animal that doesn't move around the screen then it's bad RNG. Being able to bring health items to the boss makes the fight more fair really plus the invincibility frames help a lot when you want to grapple the bosses.
My only complaints are bad enemy combinations and cheap bosses (mainly stage 4 and 5). You can barely grapple the final boss as well unless your extremely near enough to grab him BUT if you somehow manage to bring 3 or 4 lives then just spam your Air special till he dies.
It's really an underrated gem, a bit of a shame it didn't sell well. A manga adaptation was made, game boy spin off was released and of course the japan only snes port (which I'll cover in the future). The music is upbeat and catchy, the graphics are really detailed (especially the explosions and backgrounds) and it's actually a fair game really. I recommend Rosa as she's a great starter character. Matt helps as well (mainly because of his charge attack).
