May 12th, 1942: With partially replenished forces and new equipment, the Red Army launches an offensive to retake Kharkov. Stalin believes that a pre-emptive strike here will disrupt the expected German offensive aimed at Moscow. The attack will indeed come as a surprise to the Germans, but it will hit an area of the line where the Wehrmacht is already massing forces in preparation for its great 1942 summer offensive aimed at the Caucasus - not Moscow.

After staving off the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941/42, the German Wehrmacht reclaims the initiative the following summer. Concentrating their forces in the south, the Germans once again slice through Soviet lines, aiming for the oilfields of the Caucasus and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the Red Army has learned much from past failures and prepares to strike back in an overwhelming fashion.
