SCRIPT:
Caravans (As of 1.5.4) Changes since release, how to get a caravan, quick facts and when to get caravans.
So this will be my third update for caravans, i had a video at launch,
at 1.4.1 and now 1.5.4. Caravans since the start of the game have been
severely nerfed but also have had some good fixes as well.
Before when i made my first video, caravan sizes ranged from 30-100+ troops, mostly recruits because all AI lords had their party filled with 80% recruits.
Also companions that you chose did not earn trade skill XP from running
a caravan.
Now as of 1.4.1 which was when my last video was made, a lot of nerfs were made, but also some buffs. First big change that stands out is that now the max number of troops in a caravan is 30. You can now choose to get either a basic caravan for 15K or a stronger caravan with better troops for 22.5K and your companions now do earn trade XP.
List of changes that came to caravans:
First i am going to show the changes that we got previous to 1.4.1 which
was also included in my last update video, so you can pause and read those changes, but we will be going over the changes that we received since our last video and as of 1.4.1.
Pre 1.4.1 Changes:
- Better caravan troop equipment (e1.1.0)
- Caravans sell prisoners if they capture any (e1.1.1)
- Companions with a higher trade skill earn more with caravans (e1.3.0)
- Caravans will rest in settlements for longer if wounded (e1.3.0)
- Caravans will now be always mobile, not stand around (e1.3.0)
- Can create a better caravan with increased price (e1.3.0)
- Trade skill XP rewarded to companions (e1.4.0)

Changes after 1.4.1:
- Caravan Guards, Veteran Caravan Guards and Armed Traders have better
stats now which will make attacking caravans a little bit harder (e1.4.2)
- Lords & Companions can now die during battle (e1.5.1)
- A lot of economic changes and prices changes were made through various patches that affected caravans and all other income in a positive way.
Alright now how do you make a caravan and what do you need:
Before you start a caravan you need a companion in your party that can
run the caravan, best companions have a high trade skill.
Best companions are:
Spicevendors - 100 trade
Swift - 80 trade
Search for companions using the encyclopedia using the hotkey "n"
Once you have a companion, you will need 15K or 22.5K denars depending if you want a basic caravan (15K) or a more stronger one (22.5K).
Once you have both, go to a town and ask any noble about starting one.
Preferably go to a town that is deep in your kingdom or the kingdom you are
a vassal or mercenary in.
Now some quick facts (condfirmed by developers)
First: Do not make 2 caravans in same town, it will give less profit.
Second: Caravans do not visit enemy towns, so if you are at war, then start the caravan as far away as possible.
Third: You caravan limit is equal to your clan tier.
Fourth: Not so much of a quick fact, but here is how caravans work and pay you:
Caravans buy low at one town and sell high at another town, also they sell to lords.
Now when the caravans capital (or money on hand) goes below 5000, you pay the difference so the caravan can go back to 5000. So if the caravan has 4200, you pay then 800 so they can be back at 5000.
Now if the caravans capital goes above 10K, the player gets 10% of the extra capital. So if your caravans makes 15K, you will get 500 because 15k - 10K = 5K and 10% of 5K is 500. Once you receive the denars, your caravan will then be down to 14500.
Also wage is now paid before you receive your profits, so sometimes wages will result in the player making 0 denars.
Now when should you start a caravan?
Simple answer is as soon as possible.
Caravans are a great sources of income, early or late game. Caravans usually bring in a couple hundred to about 2K per day if they are successful, which is about what you would get from a semi good town around the 3K-6K prosperity range.
Yes they can be taken down and now with lord deaths being added, your companions can be killed in battle while defending your caravan, but caravans will propel your income and give you your return on investment more than they will lose it.
I suggest you first purchase a few workshops and that income will help you pay for your early caravan loses because the first couple in game days of starting a caravan, it will be in the negative.
