In this video I talk about what factors you need to consider when upgrading your PS4 hard drive. Those of you who about to upgrade or about to buy a PS4 should find it useful.

For a step by step guide on upgrading your PS4, PS4 slim, and PS4 Pro hard drive, check out my video tutorial at https://youtu.be/c1yLVox-SEk

The Eurogamer article I referred to in my video regarding boot times can be viewed at http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-is-it-worth-upgrading-your-ps4-with-an-ssd

Check out this video by Tested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGjSJwlHK6M as it shows the difference in times between spindle drives, hybrid drives, and solid state drives.

The ryli.net article that gives good recommendations on what drive to buy can be seen at http://www.ryli.net/the-best-hard-drive-hdd-options-for-your-ps4/

The figures I quoted about hard drive failure rates can be seen at https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-stats-q1-2016/

For reference, the internal hard drive found in my PS4 is the Toshiba MQ01ABD050 500GB SATA 3GB/s 5400RPM 2.5 Inch 9.5mm Internal Hard Drive. The hard drive in your PS4 may differ.

The hard drive I have purchased is the Seagate FireCuda. I'm not too concerned about SeaGate failure rates since they give a five year warranty.

You can read more about the FireCuda at http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/firecuda/ and about the more affordable BarraCuda at http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/barracuda/

Information about the Seagate Backup Slim Plus can be viewed at http://www.seagate.com/consumer/backup/backup-plus/ - It's a great option for an internal PS4 hard drive because of it's low price, but please do check some tutorials before you choose this option and be aware that Seagate will not honour the warranty if the drive fails because it was sold as an external USB hard drive.

If you are curious about what's inside the PS4, check out this breakdown by iFixit - https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation+4+Teardown/19493

My video focuses on replacing the internal hard drive on your PS4. An alternative option to an internal hard drive upgrade is the Nyco Data Bank. It's not something I ever considered as I have read conflicting reports about how good it is; plus it's a big ugly thing that sits on top of your PS4. It's available for around $40 and and allows you to add a 3.5" hard drive up to 4TB if your PS4 model is below CUH-1200 and up to 8TB if your PS4 model is above CUH-1200. More info at http://nyko.com/products/playstation-4-data-bank

If you have any questions about any of this, please leave a comment below and I will do my best to answer them.

Thanks guys.
