The United States government has officially recognized Brittney Griner's arrest in Russia as a "wrongful detainment" and will now move to negotiate with the Kremlin for her release. The decision comes after the Russian state released a U.S. Marine in a prisoner swap deal weeks ago and has also permitted the WNBA and other athletes and organizations to publicly support and call for Griner's release during the season.
