Here's a little light show I made for a party (nobody came to the party, but I had my fun regardless, lol).

All you need is:

a near-field projector (I got a cheap used Promethean with supposedly new lamp mounted)
a laptop that can render some stuff at 60 FPS.
a smoke machine (I got a cheap used Beamz S500)
software that draws pretty flashing colors (I used Godot game engine and a quick visual shader I whipped up on the spot - i may upload it later if there's a desire).

A projector is like a dense rectangular array of RBG lasers. By feeding a moving image to it we can animate the lasers individually. What's cool is that there's no complexity limit on what we can do with this, assuming your laptop can keep up.

This light show is not reactive to the music at all. But it could be done. In theory it could even be controlled via MIDI using something like a Launchpad.

I haven't made that, but maybe you have? If so - share that in the comments!

A near-field projector has a very wide angle of projection, making it ideal for light shows in small places. This one projects a large image onto a wall if you stand it at it's base.

The manual says the projector is not supposed to be tilted by more than 15° because that can screw with it's airflow. That could shorten it's lifespan.

You know what else could shorten it's life span? If it slept and shattered the lamp inside. So be smart and put something rubbery under the projector to make sure it won't slip and fall.

I have used coil of cheap HDMI wire to both transfer the image to and keep the projector from slipping. Now that's efficiency!

I thought you might find this interesting.

Music played in the video:
The Prodigy - Voodo People (Pendulum remix)

I have played my own music for like 2 hours earlier that day (before it was completely dark) when there was still people around, but this is basically "after the party was over".
That's also why the music is so quiet.
