UT2004 Hit Streak (encoder quality test - info in description)
I used this bit for some Youtube re-encoding testing and figured out that at least the initial low-quality encoder has difficulty assigning bitrate well when given high-detail material. I recorded footage in 100 Mbit/s (which strained my system) and uploaded that, then this one re-encoded to 12 Mbit/s with x264's veryslow preset, then I did a comparison of veryslow and medium. Turns out if you do the encoding on your side and already remove the detail that Youtube will have to throw away anyway (i.e. using medium quality preset), you get a better quality. If you upload material with amazing detail and quality, Youtube's encoder will try to preserve all that, and clumsily. Medium and veryslow looked equal on my end, but on Youtube's end medium overall looked better, because - again - there's no point in trying to preserve detail on your end that Youtube will have to discard anyway due to its relatively low 1080 bitrate.
All this might change if you upload videos that get lots of views, because then Youtube will use a higher quality encoding.
As a side note, I tried various non-linear video editing software lately and found all of them kinda appaling here or there, usually the encoding side. I will as far as I can stick to my trusty Virtual Dub using x264VfW. It has its quirks, too, but I know them and can live with them, and the encoding is mostly excellent.
