Fronted by genderqueer nonbinary poet & activist Kayla Fernandes, Vagina Witchcraft dives headfirst into deeply personal topics concerning mental health, depression, heartbreak & anger. The 4-piece doom metal-hardcore band from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, is independently releasing their self-titled debut album October 20th, 2020.
Comprised of Fernandes' hardcore vocal delivery of their poetry (including a spoken word rendition as a speaker at the Justice For Black Lives Matter rally held at the Manitoba Legislative Building) combined with heavy doomy sludgy noisy riffs, this 6 track album aims to break stereotypes of what a metal band is supposed to be. Formed in 2018, we have since played with Cancer Bats and opened for Winnipeg punk legends, Propagandhi.
We recorded this album live in a single grueling session with some separate vocal takes at UMFM Rm.101 Studio with David Dobbs in April 2020.
After having our 7 stop tour abruptly cancelled at the last minute due to the first wave of COVID-19 closures, including a spot at Break Free Fest in Philadelphia, a festival organized by and for BIPOC / LGBTTQIA* artists, we turned to fine tuning the album with Dobbs, waiting for the world to reopen. Eventually, it was ready and we decided it was time to release the album regardless.
We are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to begin playing live music again and get on the road. In the meantime, we plan to continue writing new music to share with anyone who loves heavy music!
