VGC 2013: Kaphotics vs Trinity
5Long Beach, CA Winter Regional, Masters Division
Kurt S. (Kaphotics) bottom vs. Trinity (actually a guy).
Round 5/8 in Swiss. Both players were 3-1 before this battle.
Commentary:
Turn 1: I allowed Zapdos to stay out, not aware that he was double gem to start. In hindsight, it was a bad tradeoff for him to blow both of his gems early as he was pretty weak there on out.
Turn 2: I didn't expect to get another earthquake off; I had bullet punch in case Meinshao tried to HJK my Hydreigon before dying. No clue how bulky the Mamoswine is so I use my Meteor Gem on it just to make it 3-2 in my favor. Pretty sure he expected EQ/HeatWave, lol.
Turn 3: Volcarona and Toed get sent out; obvious bug buzz incoming (pretty sure BB can't KO Metagross yet). He stupidly set rain up so I knew Metagross would survive any fire move by Volcarona. Metagross is one fast dude, and knocks in about 110% HP of damage. His hydro pump misses, nbd tho. Metagross drops to KO range from Bug Buzz due to LO recoil.
Turn 4: He doesn't want to take another earthquake, so he is forced to take out my Metagross before his Volcarona gets KO'd. In my pocket I still am able to deal with his Volcarona, so I need to take care of the Politoed. -2 pulse does a decent amount of damage.
Turn 5: TTar is sent out since he cannot change the weather, and Hydreigon did its work so I don't protect (although I should have). His Volcarona has a significant Speed EV investment (I'm running timid 196 EV) so he outspeeds and gets the KO. Meh. TTar naturally outspeeds Toed so I KO Volcarona. I know I'll be able to survive any return move from toed (bar crits?) so the flinch at the end didn't really matter.
Turn 6: I protect, he runs. Sandstorm would have KO'd him at the end of the turn.
