VG's Rambles: How To Redownload/Purchase PS3 Content (Until 7/2/2021) And Other Random Thoughts
This video showcases the PlayStation 3's in-system store, how to purchase content, how to redownload content, and other ramblings about the PS Store and other related things. Certain things I did not mention include the following:
1. Check other region stores! The PS3 and PS Vita are almost entirely region free, except for a certain few titles. You'd be surprised on what games are available, so be sure to check at least the European and Japanese PS Stores to avoid missing out games that are still available for purchase, including some PC Engine CD games!
2. I made no recommendations on what you should buy, but if you want my opinion: games that are stuck on the PS3 currently without a physical format (ie: Pixeljunk Racers 2nd Lap), games that are more expensive in a physical format (ie: Persona games), DLC/add-ons to guarantee you'll have the full experience (not every game has a complete edition), and online passes if available (in order to play online) should probably be what you should keep your eyes on. Avatars and themes (as well as video streaming apps) for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita will also be gone if you are into those things, but I feel those should not be a priority.
3. There is no confirmation on how long Sony will allow you to redownload content you've purchased. It may be a year; it may just be mere months after shutting down the store. Safe to assume it will be an option until they decide to cut off the PSN for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. When that happens, trophy syncing, redownloading content, patching games, and playing online will indeed be completely unavailable.
4. I failed to mention that there is a type of battery in the PS3 and PS4 systems that syncs up to the internet clock to do an online check to play the games. If this battery ever dies, the PS3 can only play physical games, and PS4 can't play a single game period. However, I've seen a few people say this battery could be replaced, but it still is very concerning of a problem.
5. Discount codes are a thing, but I'm uncertain on how legal or legit they are. I only received one official discount code throughout my entire time being on PSN since 2008.
Final Thoughts: The PS Store being shutdown for these older platforms isn't terribly surprising, as Sony already updated the webstore to not include the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP contents before the PlayStation 5 was released. However, there is still a good amount of content available on these platforms not available anywhere else. I will not blame anyone going down the piracy route instead of buying the content legally, but I rather purchase them legally until it is completely unavailable. If there is anything you were interested in the store, it is best to get the content as soon as possible! I hope this video was helpful in some shape or form if you are running into some issues for some reason. For the future, this can be considered a time capsule to see what the PS3 Store was like for those really curious, although I'd imagine there's plenty of those kind of videos like that.
