Part 1 of a two part look at the evolution of video game box design, an aspect of game marketing that is often overlooked. Game boxes have to represent their systems and differentiate themselves from their competition in the matter of seconds it takes for a consumer to walk past them in a retail space. This video looks at how the major game companies tried to solve the problem of making their software seem bold and exciting within the confines of packaging and shelf space limitations. Though subtle, changes in box design have had a major impact on how we relate to and remember games as a physical medium.
