Wow, what a splatter fest!
Gruesome kill-moves with limbs flying and blood spurting... awesome!
Graphically it's not top notch (it's an year-old Xbox port), but it's not bad either and the style is modern fantasy; unfortunately a little un-viking like.
Anyway, you are the Hero in the name of Freya, goddess of war and "the good side". You have to stop the invasion of Hel (daughter of the "bad" god Loki) in the mortal world of Midgard.
You do so by not only killing small groups of enemies in the struggle for key points on the map (like farms) and freeing fellow Vikings in this open world, but you also have to engage in scripted mega-battles, including hundreds of vikings and enemies, with dragons - which you have to summon to fight for your side - and giants, which are the Heroes of Hel. And this is mightily impressive, with some very cool combat mechanics: for instance, you have to kill an enemy hero to gain points, which you can then use on the dragon to take out major POIs like wizards or groups of archers.
On your travels to free the lands, you find gold, with which you can upgrade your weapons and powers. You can also purchase/learn new combos from the heroes of old, which aid you in your battles.

I didn't have any problems playing it in Win8; but with Fraps enabled, the game becomes sluggish as hell, with frames down to 20. Because of that I only captured small portions of the game and not a complete playthrough. And because of the horrible controls I had to tweak my mouse with Logitechs software.
