Visions of Mana: Optimizing Combat - SPOILERS (Chapter 4)
Visions of Mana is the first new mainline Mana series game in over a decade, and I have seen some people playing the game very slowly. I have an example boss fight here from Chapter 4 where you can see how much more damage you deal with proper builds and strategy: this is on Hard difficulty as well. BE WARNED THAT THIS BOSS IS SPOILER-Y, so if you haven't gotten to Chapter 4 yet then consider not watching.
Combat in every Mana (Seiken Densetsu) game uses an abusable damage formula that works exactly like ATLUS RPGs such as Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, or even Etrian Odyssey, and it can be summarized thusly: Buff Self + Debuff Enemy x Use Elemental Weakness = BIG DAMAGE. Read on below for the breakdown of the boss and the party building.
Today we're fighting Daelophos, who is Holy elemental and has a Dark weakness. While there's no way to have Dark Elemental Classes by the time you fight Daelophos, you can still equip Dark Moves onto your characters via Ability Seeds. I show the Abilities we have equipped before the fight begins, but the important one is that I equip Dark Saber to Val so that he can cast it on the entire party, and keep him as a Rune Knight since their Saber-focused gameplay and build is perfect for me. Careena is a mandatory auto-include at this point as the only one who can both buff and debuff, and we'll instruct Careena to quickly debuff Daelophos's stats and buff the others multiplying the damage dramatically. Lastly we have the character you wish you play as, which if you're serious about winning will be someone using a Moon Elemental class. This is because the TIME STOP from using the Vessel of the Moon is so absurdly strong that it enables ridiculous safety and DPS against bosses. Of all the Moon classes available, Morley's Nightblade stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of DPS, while also being fun to play. Morley has an ability to boost Critical Hit rate and will eventually have passives that rend and debuff both Physical and Magical Defense every time he Crits: this will prove immensely useful. If you ever find yourself struggling in this game, spend a little time playing as the Nightblade and getting familiar with Morley's moveset: you won't regret it.
