Wacky Races – WedNESday – GreenGimmick Gaming
In 1983, the Nintendo Company would release their Family Computer system known as the Famicom in Japan. Two years later, in 1985, the system would be released in the U.S. as the Nintendo Entertainment System and would soon gain worldwide recognition. This little 8-bit third-generation video game system would help revitalize the struggling industry and medium of video games. Boasting a library of over 700 official titles and dozens of unlicensed and unofficial games over its nearly 20-year lifespan, in this series we look to try as many of these games as possible, bring more attention to these title and celebrating the system that inspired and entertained so many over the years.
This week on WedNESday we play through Wacky Races. Despite its name Wacky Races is not a sports game about racing but a platforming game based on the 1968 cartoon of the same name by Hanna-Barbera Productions. Instead of taking on the role of one of the more heroic protagonists from the show, we instead take on the role of one of the more villainous racers as we play the dog “Muttley” and try to help his master and racing partner “Dick Dastardly” overcome various obstacles. Wacky Races was released in the US in 1992 and was and published by Atlus.
