If you’ve seen Machete, you know it’s anything but kid-friendly — Danny Trejo’s character is a no-nonsense vigilante who takes down enemies with brutal efficiency (and, of course, a machete). But what might surprise you is this: Machete is actually part of the Spy Kids universe.

That’s right. The same character who slaughters cartel members in an R-rated bloodbath is also Uncle Machete — the gadget-building, tough-but-loving uncle of Juni and Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise.

Both films were created by director Robert Rodriguez, who cleverly linked the two worlds together. While Spy Kids catered to a PG audience, Rodriguez took the opportunity to expand the character’s story in a wildly different direction — cranking up the violence and adult themes for Machete and its sequel.

It’s one of the most unexpected shared universes in modern cinema — and many fans are still discovering the connection years later.

Did you already know Machete was part of the Spy Kids universe?
